Frailty (What Does It Mean?)

You have all probably heard the word frail, but what does it mean? The word frail is an adjective meaning physically weak, delicate, easily broken, damaged, or destroyed. Prevention of becoming frail can be accomplished by performing activities like brisk walking, strength training, balance training, bike riding, and a healthy diet. These types of physical activities can also help to prevent falls. Falls are the seventh leading cause of death for people over the age of 65. Most falls are due to poor balance or trip hazards (such as cords, wet floors, etc). You can decrease the risk of falls by performing some of the activities listed above.

Avoiding Frailty

  • Become involved in aerobic activities such as swimming, cycling, or walking.
  • Strength train using tubing or weight that use your arms, legs, and muscles of the stomach.
  • Challenge your balance in a safe and effective way.
  • Stretch the muscles of your back, legs, and arms.
